The Department of Physics, established in 1965, has a proud legacy spanning over five decades and holds the distinction of being the first undergraduate department of the college, having launched the B.Sc. Physics programme in 1976. The department is committed to academic excellence, quality teaching, and impactful research in Physics, with a consistent record of outstanding student performance, including University First Ranks in the B.Sc. Physics programme in 2022 and 2024. Supported by a dedicated team of four teaching staff and two non-teaching staff, the department offers a dynamic academic environment with well-equipped undergraduate and research laboratories and a conference hall for scholarly activities. Since 2017, the department has been funded under the DST–FIST programme, significantly strengthening its research infrastructure. A DST–FIST sponsored research laboratory, established in 2020, supports advanced research in key and emerging areas of Physics.
The department also nurtures high-achieving students through the Indo–US Physics Scholars Program (IUPSP), sponsored by distinguished alumnus Prof. G. Ajith Kumar. This flagship initiative identifies and mentors outstanding undergraduate students, providing full scholarships and structured research guidance to prepare them for MS and PhD programs in India and abroad, with a special focus on opportunities in the United States.
